It is with great pleasure that I announce our next eBook title, Building Large Scale Sci-Fi & Fantasy Models. This book is written by Jason Gares, of Video Workbench fame, and will feature no less then eight builds of sci-fi & fantasy figures and models.

This book is the distillation of a series of build articles that Jason wrote for the now-defunct Sci-fi & Fantasy Modeller magazine.

We start with Jason’s awarding-winning vignette of Star Wars droids, featuring kits from Bandai:

Next up is the Dragon Models Hulk kit:

This is followed by a Lost in Space diorama from the Lunar Models resin kit, entitled “Invaders from the Fifth Dimension”:

Our fourth build features the rare Quarantine Studios unpainted Mars Attacks statue:

Next, we pivot slightly while Jason explains how to create and cast a Moon base:

Returning to large scale figures, Jason paints an ‘Engineer’ bust from the movie Prometheus, sculpted by Apikitt L. Highway:

Moving away from figures yet again, our second-to-last feature showcases the Masterpiece Models Time Machine kit, from the 1960 film:

And finally, we round the book out with a boutique sculpture from Spyda Creations, called Tournament Challenge:

Stay tuned for more news and information as work progresses! We estimate that the book will be ready some time in Q2, 2021.

KLP Publishing in 2021

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was a difficult year for all of us. But anecdotal reports have suggested that the scale modelling hobby has experienced increased uptake and participation, as people seek fulfilling ways to pass the time during various lockdowns and restrictions. This, at least, is fantastic news.

2020 was also a good year for KLP Publishing—our best yet, in fact, with three new books published, updates to the existing catalogue, and strong and growing sales. As a consequence, we have a growing number of prospective projects in various stages of development and planning, some of which will bear fruit in 2021. I normally don’t like to announce or discuss book projects publicly until they’re firmly under way, but I thought I might break that rule and give a sneak preview of some of the things that may see the light of day this year!

Building the Special Hobby Tempest Mk V in 1/32 Scale

This title has already been announced, and work is beginning in earnest as I type. Chuck Sawyer’s build is amazing, and I’ll be working hard to make sure that the book is, too.

Another of Chuck’s exceptional builds is also in the queue:

And another one from John Kim:

Something a little different:

And some hints of things to come…

No guarantees are given for any of the above six projects yet, but I’ll certainly be working to ensure they all come to fruition!

And if you have any suggestions for future eBook projects that you’d like to see, please drop me a line or leave a comment, and I’ll add them to the list for consideration.

Here’s to a happy, prosperous, and (eventually) pandemic-free 2021!

Chuck has built many outstanding and award-winning models, some of which have graced the pages and cover of FineScale Modeler magazine.

In this new Build Guide, Chuck takes Special Hobby’s decent but challenging 1/32 Hawker Tempest Mk V kit, combines it with a resin nose upgrade set from Barracuda Studios, along with some judicious detailing, and turns out yet another masterpiece.

We’re planning to have Building the Special Hobby Tempest in 1/32 Scale available by the end of Q1 2021—and with good luck and hard work, sooner than that!

Stay tuned for more news and updates as they come to hand.
